Oh Large Evergreen Tree Covered In Lights That Celebrates No Holiday In Particulaaarrrr

Rhode Island will be lighting a “Holiday Tree” in the capital. Oh. Brother. There comes a point when all this all-inclusive-offend-no-one-free-thinking stuff becomes exclusive, offensive and closed-minded. Apparently Rhode Island has found that point and embraced it. This stuff just makes me angry and sad, not as a Christian or an American but as a person with a damn brain. It is not a holiday tree anymore than a menorah is a holiday candle holder. It symbolizes something for a specific group of people. If it will offend others just don’t put it up at all rather than usurp it and redefine it to fit your needs. If I were to buy a menorah and fill it with my Advent candles, not only would it be offensive, it wouldn’t change that it’s still actually a menorah. I don’t want people to be excluded. I understand there are probably a lot of Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, and Atheists in Rhode Island. So why not have a CHRISTMAS tree, a huge menorah, a happy Buddha, a plaster of paris Koran and a transparent plastic box full of nothing (which would still be full of air which is a something so the Atheist might still be offended-there’s no pleasing some people) on the state house lawn? Or nothing at all. When a group of kids can’t get along and share something what does the adult do? Takes it away. Nobody gets it. I’m fine with that. Like the mother in the story of wise King Solomon I’d rather not have the tree at all then see it be maimed into something it’s not.

And to my fellow Christians let’s just shut up about it. Again, let’s go back to when we were younger, I’m sure most mothers gave the same advice as mine: Ignore a bully and he’ll go away. A bully is looking for a reaction, when they’re not getting one they move on. Do I need a tree in front of the state house to celebrate Christmas? Nope. We know it’s about so much more than that tree. Remember the Whos Down in Whoville who loved Christmas a lot? And the Grinch who lived just north of Whoville who did not? After he stole all their trees, trappings and symbols did they storm the mountain demanding their stuff back? No, they sang:

Fahoo forays, dahoo dorays
Welcome Christmas! Come this way
Fahoo forays, dahoo dorays
Welcome Christmas, Christmas Day
Welcome, welcome, fahoo ramus
Welcome, welcome, dahoo damus
Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to clasp
Welcome Christmas. Bring your cheer,
Cheer to all Whos, far and near.
Christmas Day is in our grasp
So long as we have hands to grasp.
Christmas Day will always be
Just as long as we have we.
Welcome Christmas while we stand
Heart to heart and hand in hand.
